Locust Fork student fatally injured in early morning wreck

A Locust Fork family, fellow students, and the entire community are heartbroken over the death of a Locust Fork Elementary kindergarten student early Monday morning. The wreck shut down Ala 79, and traffic was rerouted as emergency personnel responded to this tragedy. 

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the 5-year-old child was a passenger in a 2014 GMC Yukon driven by Karley B. Edwards, 35, of Locust Fork. The Yukon reportedly left the roadway and struck a ditch before overturning into a creek. The child was not restrained at the time of the crash and pronounced deceased at the scene. Edwards, who was also not wearing a seatbelt, was injured and transported to UAB for treatment. 

Monday afternoon, Blount County Board of Education superintendent Rodney Green released the following statement:

 "The Blount County Schools family is heartbroken to learn of the passing of one of our students this morning in a tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the student's family, friends, and teachers at this most difficult time.

“The impact of such a loss cannot be measured. Counseling support and therapy dogs are being provided at Locust Fork Elementary to assist our students and staff during the grieving process. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and the Locust Fork Community."

Also Monday afternoon, Locust Fork Elementary Principal Amy Williamson posted, “Our hearts are heavy and we are suffering over the loss of one of our precious students. So many have reached out and we are so thankful for a loving community who hurts alongside of us.

“Please remember the family, friends, students, teachers/staff, and all of us who know and love this family. We do not have any words for such a loss. We love our community and are thankful for all of you. Prayers are greatly appreciated.”

The wreck occurred approximately four miles south of Locust Fork on Ala 79 near Peyton Lane. The accident remains under investigation and no further information is available.
