Donald Gene Smith
Dr. Donald Gene Smith, affectionately known
as “Doc” by all his friends and family passed away
Friday, April 10, 2026, at Cullman Regional Medical
Center. Doc was 89 years old, born Sept. 12, 1936, in
Blount County, the son of Leonard Smith and Connie
Stephens Smith.
He was a graduate of J.B. Pennington High
School and served four years in the United States Air
Force. He graduated from the University of Alabama
School of Dentistry in 1964. He practiced dentistry
in Blountsville for 53 years before retiring to work on
his farm and enjoy being with family and friends.
He is survived by his sister Betty Taylor; her two
sons Mike and Greg Taylor; also survived by Mike’s
children, Jeff and Melissa; and a host of other family
and many friends.
Funeral service was Sunday, April 12, 2026, at 3
p.m. at Blountsville Funeral Home with David Taylor
and Dennis Martin officiating. Burial was in Mt. He-
bron Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p,.m.
Doc picked his pallbearers and honorary pall-
bearers and has noted several of the connections to
these friends.

Larry Smith, Trent Lunsford, Austin Lunsford, and
Jeff Gibbs;

Farm Friends: Dr. Dan Scott - Doc’s first surgery

farms in Cullman; Charles Newman, with his main
grandson, Cam Lay; Grady Pate-guitar picker, plow
boy with Big M Tractor; Shane Hallman-best tenant;
Cleve Green-sold farm and moved to Cullman; Bobby
Green-big in VOAG; Royce King-class mate; Sherry
White-classmate.
Honorary Football Heroes: Farris Absher-high
school, a Mr. Pennington favorite; Bobby Johns-col-
lege hero-two time All-American, University of
Alabama.
