Some of you have asked, “Why tourism or why would anyone want to visit Blount County?” So, I want to take this month’s column to discuss just that.
Tourism is a game changer for rural economic growth. When people think of economic development, they often picture big factories, corporate headquarters, or high-tech industries. While Blount County does have some large manufacturers and companies that provide a great living wage, most leave the county to work. Being an economic developer of 13 years prior to becoming the Director of Tourism, the Blount County Economic Development Council searches and strives to bring new companies to the county.
In the last three years alone, companies like Summertown Metals, Birmingham & Associates, and Freedom Packaging have chosen to locate their businesses here. But in rural areas like Blount County, tourism is proving to be a powerful engine for economic growth. With our scenic landscapes, outdoor adventures, and deep-rooted traditions, we have the perfect ingredients for a thriving tourism industry — and the economic benefits that come with it.
The Rise of Rural Tourism
Rural tourism has become increasingly popular as more people seek to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Visitors are looking for authentic experiences, outdoor recreation, and a taste of small-town charm. Blount County delivers on all fronts, offering everything from kayaking on the
Locust Fork River, hiking trails, and Rickwood Caverns State Park to exploring our unique downtown shopping district in Oneonta.
But tourism isn’t just about weekend getaways and Instagram-worthy views — it’s an economic powerhouse. When visitors come to our county, they bring more than just their backpacks and cameras; they bring their wallets, too. And that spending fuels job creation, business growth, and community development.

Blount County is tapping into the power of tourism-driven economic development. With initiatives like the Blount County Barbecue Trail, the Agritourism Trail, and expanded outdoor recreation opportunities through North Alabama Trails and Recreation, we are putting our best assets on display. These efforts not only bring visitors to our area, but also create sustainable economic opportunities for residents.
