Hayden's Wrestling Team Caps Historic Season with 2nd Place Finish at State
Hudson Best, Isaac O’Rear, and Kalub Blanding of Hayden High School won individual state championships Saturday at AHSAA's State Wrestling Meet in Huntsville. The Wildcats also brought home the AHSAA Wrestling 2nd place Red Map, marking the best finish in program history.
Harley Brisco, John Kelley, and Koltan Motte each finished third in their weight class, while Eli McAlpine finished fourth. The team finished with 119.5 points. Top finisher Scottsboro had 151.0 points, while Corner finished third with 90.0 points.
Saturday's competition started with the consolation finals. Up first was McAlpine in the 106 pound classification. Eli McAlpine, a freshman, lost by an 11-6 decision to Elmore County freshman Casey Crumpton, but with his fourth-place finish he picked up 9 points for the team. Competing in the 126 pound class was sophomore Harley Briscoe. His third place finish over Shelby County senior Garrett Slaughter by technical fall gave the Wildcats 14.5 points. John Kelley, a junior competing in the 150 pound class, took down Shelby County senior Logan Loyd for third place and another 14.5 points for Hayden. Kolten Motte, competing in the 215 pound weight classification, was the final Hayden wrestler to compete in the consolation finals. The junior won by tech fall over Leflore Magnet School sophomore Jakourian Gibson. With the win, he collected 13.5 points for the Wildcats.
Hayden's final three wrestlers hit the mats Saturday afternoon in the championship finals. Up first in the 138 pound class was sophomore Hudson Best. He won the championship by a 10-7 decision over Arab senior Jaxon Ivey. He earned a total of 21.5 points for the Wildcats.
Isaac O'Rear, a senior, competed in the 190 pound class. He took down John Carroll Catholic junior Alex Plaia, giving Hayden its second first place finisher and another 22 points.
Senior Kalub Blanding was the final Wildcat to compete. In the 285 pound class, he faced Corner senior Jordan McKinney, winning by fall to claim the championship. His win gave Hayden 23.5 more points.
Another first for Wildcat Wrestling was the addition of a girls wresting team this season. And, Jurnei Briscoe’s top finish in the North Super Section gave her the distinction of being Hayden's first female wrestler to compete in the state championship. Jurnei, an eighth grader, made it to the consolation 100 pound weight class semifinals in the 1A-5A division.
